A Retrospective Exhibition "Abstract: The Truth of Art" Ithipol Thangchalok
Organized by BACC Exhibition Department
Supported by Asia Plus Group Holdings Public Company Limited and SCG Foundation
18 August - 22 November 2015
Main Gallery, 8th floor
Opening Reception: 21st August 2015 at 18.00 hrs. at Multi-Function Room, 1st floor

Nearly 100 pieces including the former works and the ones that are never exhibited are the works from ever period during 50
years of creation of Ithipol Thangchalok who, among few Thai Contemporary artists, intently and determinedly persists in following
the path of abstract art.

The path of Ithipol’s creation began with printing techniques that he practiced in his undergraduate years. When he pursued
his master degree in the United States, he was officially acquainted of abstract art and realized that his practice could harmoniously
get together with the philosophy of abstract art. By the end of 70s, abstract art in Thailand was losing its popularity and his
fellow artists advised him to shift his praxis, Ithipol firmly insisted that " Abstract art always works for me."

Because of his unchanging and serene path of creativity, Ithipol discovers the "truth" of art in many aspects. Finally it is all about
his faith in the simplicity of abstract art, which allows the artist’s mind to truly discover the "truth" of art.

Guest Curator: Dr.Toeingam Guptabutra

Artist: Professor Emeritus Ithipol Thangchalok

fundamental aspect of being human.

Upcomings in September

bacc cinema

Cinema Diverse: Director's Choice 2015
Saturday 5 September 2015 at 16.30 - 21.00 hrs.
Auditorium, 5th floor

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre proudly presents "Cinema Diverse: Director's Choice
2015"
. For the third Cinema Diverse, five international films, selected by five acclaimed
Thai directors, will be shown bi-monthly from March – November 2015, followed by
a talk with the Thai director after each screening.

The fourth screening on Saturday 5 September 2015 is The Chaser (Korea / 2008)
directed by Na Hong-jin. It has been chosen by Banjong Pisanthanakun, an acclaimed
Thai director of Pee Mak, Hello Stranger and Shutter.

The Chaser is Na Hong-jin’s directorial debut. The film had grossed over $35 million
(1.2 billion baht) in South Korea alone. Apart from its commercial success, The Chaser
was screened out of competition in the Cannes Film Festival 2008, and won 6 Korean
Film Awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor. It has been praised as one
of the best Korean action-thriller movies of all time.

"I am crazy about thriller films. Of course I started with American thrillers but soon I
formed the opinion that Korean directors make the best thriller movies. They seemed
to be masters of suspense with excellent tension-building techniques. Their clever use
of violence carries a real emotional impact, much like in this film, The Chaser. I used to
believe that only directors from Western countries could make good movies about serial killers. The killers in these films would mostly come from the upper class, often being
extremely clever but deranged. However after watching The Chaser, with its working
class characters and the plain and simple motive of the killer, I realised that anyone can
make a good thriller movie about serial killers. It showed what could be done once you
have a good story and know how to play with the audience’s emotions just like what
Mr. Na Hong-jin did superbly with The Chaser." Banjong Pisanthanakun

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fxm72hmhdXU

Join us for the screening of The Chaser and a post screening talk with Banjong
Pisanthanakun
and Na Hong-jin, the film director.
