Shifting Horizons: music, myth, and memory.
The media art of John Sanborn

Organised by BACC Exhibition Department
25 March - 10 July 2016
Main Gallery, 7th floor

John Sanborn was a key member of the second wave of American video artists that
included Bill Viola, Gary Hill, Dara Birnbaum, and Tony Oursler. And though much of his early
works were shown in celebrated institutions, from the Whitney and MoMA in NYC, to the
Pompidou Center in Paris, his career embraced a fuller media journey that would take him inside broadcast television, to Hollywood, and to Silicon Valley. This exhibition marks the manner of this return, looking to music, the foundation, the pattern for his distinctive use
of media formalism; it conjures up issues of myth and reinvention, as media remain an ever-changing medium; finally it acknowledges Sanborn’s role in performance and performative collaborations with major 20th century dancers and performers, settling the bond between him and his mentor, Nam June Paik.

Omnivoyeur and Electrical Walks
Bangkok Electromagnetic Sound and Visual Project

1 April - 4 September 2016
Main Gallery, 7th floor

Organised as part of Urban Media Project by Goethe - Institut
Thailand, BACC Exhibition Dept., Connecting Cities Network in Berlin

In the phenomenon of the absence and presence communicates through the works of
two artists, a renowned German sound artist Christina Kubisch and a Thai Photographer,
Miti Ruangkritya investigate the urban landscape like Bangkok. The electromagnetic walk
of Christina Kubisch guides viewer through city with map and custom-made headphone catching magnetic sound that are inaudible to naked ears, while field-recorded images
of Miti Ruangkritya prolonging perceptibility of mundane living, marking reflective thoughts
from the omnipresent of media in our increasingly technological environment. Both
expressions are synthesized in an exhibition space by means of commontime and space
as well as the abstract energy that interchange to allow for new aesthetic and experience
while retaining its core essence. The title "Omnivoyeur" is a psychoanalytical concept
"I see only from one point but my existence is looked at from all sides" of Jacques Lacan,
employing as a base to offer a reverse in thought and action through the artworks where
the passiveaudience is encouraged to become an active investigator to perceive both
politics and poetic of media hidden in our urban surrounding.

Karaoke Twilight
By Taweewit Kijtanasoonthorn
2 - 31 July 2016
People's Gallery P1, 2nd floor, artHUB@bacc

The karaoke bars on the street are uniquely grey-area saturated with the light and colors
of neon lamps, filled with sensual glamour and mysteries with hidden sorrow and loneliness
of the twilight zone. This is what triggered me into creating images of light and colors
outside and inside of these karaoke bars through photos, videos and neon light objects.
I want to represent these bars and their emotions and encourage the viewers to reflect
and contemplate the implications of the hidden meanings in today’s contemporary society.

People's Gallery P2, 2nd floor, artHUB@bacc

Opening Ceremony on Tuesday12 July 2016 at 18.30 hrs.

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and the centre of business and fashion where people
from different class and background live side by side. Among the riches, there are the
poor and homeless people. This realistic painting exhibition wants to show how hard it
is for the homeless people in Bangkok where they never have anything handed on a silver
platter.

Dear my friends
By Lionel Descostes
3 - 31 July 2016
People's Gallery P3, 2nd floor, artHUB@bacc

Lionel Descostes is a French artist living in Hanoi. Alerted by the progressive dissolution
of the craftwork villages in modernizing Vietnam, Lionel decided to use art to keep
embroidery alive and support its community. He is committed to help disabled people to fit
into professional and social life. He hired 9 deaf and mute girls and started to train them.
For this exhibition, he presents three "families" of his larger body of work: pictograms,
grids and masks. Each of these groups explores from a different perspective the same
theme: anonymity, the position of individuals in society.
