Unseen Siam
Early Photography 1860 - 1910

Organised by BACC Exhibition Department and River Books
BACC Project Sponsors: The Crown Property Bureau, The Royal Photographic Society of Thailand,
Thai Beverage Public Company Limited and Thai Airways International Public Company Limited
9 September - 7 November 2016
Main Gallery, 9th floor

The first photography exhibition in Thailand features more than 150 old Siamese
photographs from the very first beginning until the end of the reign of King Chulalongkorn,
the fifth monarch of Siam. The original negatives of these photographs are kept in the
foreign country’s archive. They were taken by foreign photographers and Thais who
were later appointed Siamese court photographers. These archaic photographs which
have never been seen would bring various historical aspects to light - whether portrait
photography of King Mongkut of Siam, King Chulalongkorn, nobles and commoners;
architectures and landscapesof the past hundred years; chronicled events and royal
ceremonies; citified and provincial life; traditional dance, Khon (a masked performance),
and Likay (dramatic performance). Every photograph has become the connection to
the works of contemporary artists who would capturethe metropolis’ social- economic
particularities, her ongoing changes, along with her people’s way of life, land and water
transportation. Contemporary performance and key technology of photography will
encourage culture of history, pave way for further interpretation and sustain the life
of these photographs.

This series of works is based on my own experience, using kites as the creative method.
For me, "kite" is a toy which delivered happiness and joyfulness when I was a kid.
For this exhibition, kite is used as the medium to offer a view on social environment with implications to the intellectual and Southern culture wisdom with an attempt to present
the trace of the Thai rural tradition.

Co-organized by Independent Artisits
7 - 16 October 2016
Hall, 1st floor

This exhibition was inspired by a quote from Grandfather Kaw-ee. He said at the Court,
"I swear on all sacred spirits that I have lived on that land [Ban Bangkloi Bon] all my life.
When I first remembered the taste of my mother's milk, I was there. That is my
ancestors'l and, but if the court tells me to stay elsewhere, I'll follow. But I would like
to say that itis against my will and the authorities have forced me out of my home."

With the current political and social climate in Thailand, it marks up the current stage of
transition not only links with what goes on around the SEA region but also parts of the
world where the contemporaneity is constituted with a shift of systematic of thoughts at
present. Whether it is neo-conservative uprising, progressive evolution, the intention of
the exhibition is to broaden beyond existing boundaries to reassess current issues at hand
in their contemporaneous entirety. With the keywords such as humour, mass, superiority,
irony, revolving, and contradiction are some among many, suggested to encourage new
thoughts of self in relation to society through the works of a world famous artist, Erwin
Wurm and his practice that offers serious depth of philosophies through sublimity of art.
It is to stimulate the viewers to explore a light and humorous side yet critical sate of self to
see the pluralistic thoughts that locate one in a meaningful place in this contemporary era.
