The Portrait of the King Bhumibol Adulyadej

The portrait of the late King Bhumibol is another part of the project "In Remembrance of H.M. King Bhumibol : The Supreme Artist" organized by Bangkok Art and Culture Centre Foundation and curated by Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshayananda, a member of the BACC Foundation Board, in order to pay tribute to the Supreme Artist, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The portrait, on the wall of the BACC facing Rama I Road, was designed to refer back with the graffiti works on the BACC centre wall facing the Patumwan intersection, in which the five graffiti characters offer gestures of reverence to the late king.

The portrait, measuring 34 metres by 25 metres or 850 sqm., was made with the wheat- pasting technique with the collaboration between a group of street artists, and art students from five art institutions : King Mongkut Institute of Technology Lat Krabang, Poh Chang Academy of Arts, Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin, Chang Silp (College of Fine Arts), Silpakorn University and Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi. The students had earlier made the portrait out of 39 panels before they were put up on the wall. This is the world’s largest portrait of the monarch by wheat-pasting technique.

No rain in the rainy season. No simmering sun in the summer. No lingering taste in the bitten fruit. Lemons turn sweet while papayas turn bitter. Humans give birth to dogs and papayas to monkeys. Do they feed on their melancholic mothers’ milk or is it me who is fragile in nature? For I am weak and dependent that I give thanks to my messiah, bestowing upon me the knowing of myself. Through certain abstractions, or to some it is premonition that propels life and its sentiments. It is merely a state born of a disposition, one that is untamable. Once what could be described as emotions now manifest as thoughts and actions, growing through our complicated rationalities, ever present in humans.

Culture is the basis of faith. So many symbols are the representatives of faith. Thus these symbols carry with them deep meanings for those who believe in them. This belief is my source of inspiration to convey a certain attitude toward the belief in symbols and to create a symbol with a new meaning for everyone with my artistic aesthetics. This exhibition aims to present contemporary cultural diversity and the fundamental culture of belief.

Trùng mù - endless, sightless
By Phuong Linh Nguyen
the third winner of Han Nefkens Foundation - BACC Award for Contemporary Art
2 - 28 February 2018
Studio, 4th floor

Artist and Curator Talk on Saturday 3 February 2018 at 14.00 hrs.

The exhibition Trùng mù - endless, sightless by Phuong Linh Nguyen invites audiences to journey through the medium and metaphor of light as a process of opening your eyes to memory. Trùng mù loosely translates as endless and sightless. This idea is informed by the complex geopolitical terrain of Vietnam, paying attention to the undercurrents of history. With narratives resulting in blind spots, the artist turns to the task of excavation.

Through installation and videos artworks, attention is drawn to your eye line focus through both the brightening of reality and the dimming of various stories revealing how memory is a ghostly and shadowy presence. The artworks contain references as diverse as the remains of a catholic church in Northern Vietnam to the urban synthetic light used to dry pigment quickly in nail parlours. Interested in Vietnamese mythology, the artist used folklore premised on the idea that after death, ghosts never leave and remain anintegral part of the architectural fabric of a house.

The constellation of artworks begins abstractly and progressively becomes more concrete in imagery, analogous to a waking up to the world as the light pours in giving sense to the often used statement, "I see."

I AM YOU
Artist Vasan Sitthiket

A contemporary art exhibition organised by Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
23 March - 10 June 2018
Main Gallery, 8th Floor

Opening Ceremony on Thursday 22 March 2018 at 18.30 hrs.

Never not using his voice, Vasan Sitthiket believes that it is essential for artists to be socially constructive through their creativity and platform. For the past 40 years, he has dedicated his spirit to broadcast for the muted with his confrontational style of art. The artist’s crude and raw aesthetic represents the core truth that was rinsed from human tact, leaving only the basic instincts to expose the uncomfortable truth. Such directness then makes the art more inclusive as the language is simplified into something that the majority can understand. Painting may be Vasan’s more dextrous medium but as an avid reader and writer, he often includes written words and poetry to his art, reiterating his idea of using art as a communicator.

I Am You is an exhibition which reflects the artists’s own deep rooted relationship with the Dharma. This unique interpretation of the Buddhist teaching is very telling of Vasan’s way of thinking as “I Am You” aims to link separated bodies into one and realise the effects each one has on one another thus making everyone responsible for the cycle of life. This exhibition will also be reintroducing Vasan Sitthiket to the public of this era as he has not stopped working since 1977. Vasan has stayed driven with his activist life as well as making art, making him one of Thailand most socially engaged artist active today with a firm place in the kingdom’s art history.
