After being awarded the winner of the second Han Nefkens Foundation – BACC Award for Contemporary Art in January this year, the Indian artist, Mr. Anup Mathew Thomas has arrived in Bangkok, Thailand from Kochi, India to participate in the Artist-in-residence programs from 16 June -31 July 2015.
During the residency in Bangkok, Mr. Mathew has been visiting various places, exhibitions, museums, galleries and meeting with
the local artists such as Mr. Piyatat Hemmatat, Mr. Manit Sriwanichpoom and Mr. Petch Osathanugrah. Mr. Mathew also travelled
to Chiang Mai for 3 days to visit galleries and artists including Mr. Kamin Lertchaiprasert, Mr. Navin Rawanchaikul, Mr. Kosit Juntaratip and Mr. Tawatchai Punsawat.
After the residency, Mr. Mathew will travel back to India and work on his exhibition which will present his concern together with
situations he has been involving during his visits to Bangkok and between. The exhibition is scheduled to be displayed at Studio,
4th floor, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre from
2 February - 6 March 2016.
'Han Nefkens Foundation-BACC Award for Contemporary Art'
In 2012, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) together with the Han Nefkens Foundation, Spain initiated Han Nefkens - BACC
Award for Contemporary Art. This biannual award seeks to encourage artists in Asia under the age of 40 who already have a solid
body of work but have not yet been showcased in major institutions. The award consists of 15,000 US dollars: a $3,000 artist’s fee
and $12,000 towards the production of new work as well as a residency and an exhibition at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.
