The Wound (South Africa / 2017)
Director
John Trengove

"The Wound" was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017 and was praised for its unsettling coming-of-age exploration of masculinity and repressed sexuality through an outsider’s experience of a South African initiation ritual.

Curated by
Anucha Boonyawatana

For most people, Anucha Boonyawatana is known for her latest work and second feature, "Malila: The Farewell Flower" which won numerous awards from several international film festivals. Some might even think that she is a newcomer in the Thai Film Industry. But Anucha has made a name for herself as a daring filmmaker ever since she was a senior film student at the Faculty of Communication Arts at Chulalongkorn University with her thesis short film "Down the River". Apart from shooting it with 16 mm. film, the film is a combination of Buddhist philosophy, Thai art and a love story of a gay couple. Her films mainly focus on gay couples and their intimate relationships in diverse perspectives which defy social norms. Her debut feature, "The Blue Hours" tells a story of gay teenage romance with startling genre elements in a dark and bullied world. The film was nominated for 11 Suphannahong National Film Awards.
