Shifting Horizons: music, myth, and memory.
The media art of John Sanborn
Organised by BACC Exhibition Department
25 March - 10 July 2016
Main Gallery, 7th floor
With ubiquity of media and effortless function of technology today, creating artworks employing media is not
a mind
-boggling
task much less a focused access among certain groups of users. These days everyone could
create media works, but not allare
created with quality. The merits that distinguish one from the other could
be weighted from concept of the works, craftsmanship
of expression,or skill in composing meaningful
technology. All these characters that are accomplished with qualities could be
traced from
the artist whom
his notable works rises from the technological developing period of the recent past. BACC Exhibition
Departmentproudly presents the works of John Sanborn, a key member of the second wave of American
video artists that
included Bill Viola, Gary Hill, Dara Birnbaum, Tony Oursler. And though much of his early
works were shown in celebratedinstitutions,
from the Whitney and MoMA in NYC, to the Pompidou Center in
Paris, his career embraced a broader media journey that would
take him inside broadcast television, to
Hollywood, and to Silicon Valley. All the while maintaining a presence in the art world
through installations
and collaborative pieces with composers and choreographers. 2015 marked the return of Sanborn as a
figure to be reckoned with, and whose creative history set a series of signposts for 21st century chronology, how
an artist
whowandered in and out of corporate worlds, makes his way back into the fold. This exhibition

marks the
manner of this return, looking to music, the foundation, the pattern for his distinctive use of
media formalism; it conjures up issues
of myth and reinvention, as media remains an ever-changing
medium; finally it acknowledges Sanborn’s role in performance and
performative collaborations with major
20th century dancers and performers, settling the bond between him and his mentor,
Nam June Paik.
