Girlhood (France / 2014)
Directed by Céline Sciamma
When thinking of Paris, many people might see it as the capital of art, French cuisine, and high fashion but in reality Paris also consists of rough neighborhoods with poor communities. “Girlhood” is a coming-of-age film that focuses on the life of a black all-girl gang amid the housing projects right outside of Paris who try to confront the harsh realities of modern life while struggling to get out of the big city’s poverty trap.
One of the most interesting aspects of the film and the main reason for it to be chosen for Cinema Diverse 2018: The Invisible Hands, is the largely non-professional cast who actually lives in the suburb of Paris (especially the main cast, Karidja Touré who was discovered by Sciamma at a market). This also turns out to be a very challenging task for the film director. "Their own limits. But that’s part of the deal. And you don’t want to steal anything from them. But that’s where the mise-en-scene has to step up - it’s my problem, not theirs. They had several big scenes of improv, but they were really receptive, really committed and really wanted to work."
